Without doubt hunting for vintage jewellery is an utter joy. The thrill of setting out on an adventure for a day or just an hour then finding the most perfect brooch or hopefully brooches never loses its shine. There are some days I can return empty handed.
I have an auction house in walking distance to me and I’ve bid on a few lots of the most perfect bundles but have been outbid each time. Same with the retro sideboards too, so annoying, I know I shouldn’t imagine what I’d make out the lots before I’ve won them but it’s so hard not to dream.
I’ve had more luck at local Vintage Markets in recent months finding the most stunning pieces. I shan’t pretend that I didn’t also came away with quite a few bits from those shows, including a metal galvanised bucket planter and as my Sister pointed out only you Anja would leave with a bucket…it was a very nice galvanised one I'll have you know. It’s still not planted up either, on my extensive garden to do list. My Cousin has given me a few from her brooch collection as well.
There’s always treasure hiding in thrift and charity shops. I love wondering around these shops mentally putting designs together as I find a necklace here, a bracelet there that can be broken up to add sparkle to new designs or use the beads to add extra details.
I’m also fortunate to have a fabulous craft thrift store in the town nearby where I pick up beautiful ribbons, trims and vintage buttons to add to my existing collection. That existing collection of supplies is somewhat extensive, has been on several house moves and dates back over 30 years. From University days of studying Fashion & Textiles design, to my days as a Freelance Textile Designer, I’ve collected fabric, threads, ribbons, beads and sequins. Add to that the jewellery I added through my years working in Costume Jewellery Design and there’s the answer to why I champion, where possible, to reuse, relove and reimagine all these components. Although on a side note, it's worth pointing out I can still be tempted by a quality new ribbon or more.
